The new Los Islenos
Multicultural Heritage Center (Museum Complex) is a
multipurpose building, a replica of the Coconut Island Dance
Hall in Toca Village. It was designed by Brian Borne , an
architect with Bradley and Blewster Architects of Baton Rouge,
Louisiana. It is a 70 by 36-foot building constructed of cedar
boards with the seams covered with thin strips of wood (a
technique called board-and-batten). It features a large room
which can accommodate 150 people. It will be available for
receptions, meetings, dinners, cooking demonstrations and wine
tasting, group tours and other functions.
Actually, the Museum
Complex includes the Ducros Museum and Library,
the Coconut Island Bar (a circa-1920 board-and-batten
structure) and the Estopinal House (an historically
significant building from the late 18th century, made of mud
and moss between posts).
