Chairperson, Donna Mumphrey-Martin, has put together a very impressive collection of decoys carved by Louisiana’s premier master duck carvers.
Exhibits will include works by John Parfait, Cal Kingsmill, Dick and Mike Bonner, Weldon “Duna” Bordelon, Mark Whipple and Ken Kincaid to name a few.
There were some antique guns on display, carved duck callers, framed prints by Tan Brunet and an antique pirogue. There was a display case to pay tribute to Dr. Louis Alfred Ducros, whose daughter donated his home and office to the Parish to be used as a Museum and Research Library.
There was also a display case to honor Isleño duck carver and decima singer and composer, Irvan Perez. Mr. Perez sang and wrote decimas and performed at New York’s Carneige Hall. Decimas are ten stanza narrative songs that were very popular in Spain as far back as the Middle Ages.
The songs told tales joyous occasions, sad laments and hilarious exaggerations all about everyday life in the community. They are still popular in Spain to this day.
The drawing for the beautiful reclaimed cypress gun cabinet built and donated by Mike Martin was held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the opening reception for exhibitors and their spouses, Parish officials and Fiesta sponsors. Tickets were sold for $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00 by calling 504-554-8412.
